Everything at United still runs through Bruno Fernandes at £12.0m — second-most expensive player in the entire game behind Haaland, and the priciest midfielder by a wide margin. That number is penalty duty, set pieces and a guaranteed central role, all stacked on one player. Behind him, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both sit at £7.9m, with Marcus Rashford and Benjamin Sesko at £7.0m. The defence tells a completely different story — every single United defender costs somewhere between £4.0m and £5.0m.

Bruno at £12.0m is the pick, full stop, and one of the most expensive assets in the game for good reason. Penalties, set pieces, the most advanced central role on the pitch — that combination gives him both a genuinely high floor and real haul potential most midfielders simply don't have. Cunha and Mbeumo at £7.9m are the alternative premium route if you'd rather spread the risk, both capable of goals and assists from wide.

United's defence is unusually cheap for a club their size. Yoro, de Ligt, Maguire, Dalot and Martínez all sit at £5.0m, with Mazraoui, Shaw and Heaven at £4.4m and Amass and Fredricson down at £4.0m. Lammens at £5.0m is the cheapest route into the goalkeeping slot, with Heaton at £4.0m as pure bench cover. Dalot and Mazraoui carry the most attacking upside of the group if you want a defender who does more than just defend.

Bruno is the United captaincy pick, and it comes down to the penalties — a scoring route that survives even a bad day for the rest of the team. He's most attractive at home against bottom-half sides. Cunha and Mbeumo work as differential captains in a genuinely soft fixture, but United's inconsistency means I'd usually rather put the armband on a striker at a more reliable club.

Amad Diallo, Patrick Dorgu and Youri Tielemans at £5.9m are the mid-price differentials worth knowing, all capable of returns well below Bruno's ownership. Mainoo and Mount at £5.4m are the cheaper midfield punts, and Zirkzee at £5.4m is the low-cost route into the forward line. Dorgu is the one I'd watch most closely — attacking wing-backs give you clean-sheet points and assist potential in the same slot.

The centre-forward spot is genuinely unsettled — Sesko at £7.0m, Zirkzee at £5.4m and Obi at £4.5m all competing for it, so I wouldn't pay up for Sesko until he's clearly the nailed starter. United's defence, cheap as it is, isn't a reliable clean-sheet source, so treat those £4.5-5.0m names as enablers rather than points-scorers in their own right. And with five defenders sitting at £5.0m rotating through, check the lineup before buying any of them.
