Chelsea fantasy planning starts and ends with one question: do you own Cole Palmer at £9.7m? He's the clearest route into their attack by some distance. Everything behind him is enormous and heavily rotated — Morgan Rogers (£7.6m), João Pedro (£7.7m), then a wave of £6.0-6.5m names in Estêvão, Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens, with Enzo Fernández already gone to Manchester City. The defence, oddly, is dirt cheap: five centre-backs at £4.5m apiece, though Maxence Lacroix's £52m arrival at £6.0m finally gives it something resembling a first choice. The single biggest fact shaping this squad is what's missing — Chelsea finished 10th last season, so there's no European football and no midweek-rotation excuse for any of it.

Palmer at £9.7m is the pick that defines whether you own Chelsea at all. Central role, set pieces, penalties, goals and assists in volume — there isn't a stronger case for owning one Chelsea player. Morgan Rogers is the alternative premium midfielder if you want a second look, and João Pedro has the most secure forward role in a crowded line. With Fernández gone to City, the next name up from the rotation is whichever of Estêvão, Pedro Neto or Jamie Gittens is actually starting that week.

Chelsea's defence might be the cheapest at any top-half club in the league. Jørgensen at £5.0m now has real competition for the gloves after Emiliano Martínez arrived at the same price, and Colwill, Fofana and Gusto at £4.8m are the more established cheap defensive names.

Palmer is the Chelsea captaincy option, and honestly the only one worth discussing — penalty duty plus a central role gives him the ceiling the armband actually needs. Captain him at home against bottom-half sides, where Chelsea dominate the ball comfortably. Everything else in this squad rotates too much to trust with a doubled score, so if you don't own Palmer, look for your captain somewhere else entirely.

Estêvão at £6.3m is the standout differential — real attacking quality at well below Palmer's price. Danny Welbeck, signed from Brighton at £5.9m, tends to start more often than his price suggests, which makes him a sneaky veteran punt. Quenda, Guiu and Emegha at £5.3m are the deeper bets if minutes open up.

Chelsea are the most rotation-heavy squad in the league, and it touches every position. Six centre-backs at £4.5m means picking a starter is close to a coin flip. The forward line is worse — João Pedro, Welbeck, Emegha, Guiu and Mheuka all competing, with Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap already gone to Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest — so anyone but the confirmed starter is a wasted squad slot. Outside Palmer, I'd treat every Chelsea pick as a fixture-by-fixture bet, not something you hold for the season.
