Most of the edge in Gameweek Fantasy comes from habits, not from picking a magic player. Because players lock one by one at their own kickoff, the managers who check back each day beat the ones who set a team on Friday and forget it. Here is what actually moves your score.

1. Treat the captain as a live decision

Your captain scores double, and you can move the armband until the new captain's match starts. So do not lock in your choice on Friday. Start with the player you rate most, then watch the lineups. If he is on the bench, move the armband to a starter whose match has not kicked off. If your captain's game is early and he blanks, you can also hand the armband to someone playing later in the weekend, as long as that player has not kicked off.

2. Check lineups on every match day

Starting XIs are announced about an hour before kickoff. Open your squad before each day's first game. If a starter is not in the XI, swap him for anyone in the same position who has not played yet. This costs nothing and has no points penalty, and it is the single most valuable habit in the game.

3. Use the injury flags before you lock

Players with a fitness concern show a small marker in the player list and on your pitch: red for ruled out, orange for a 50% chance or lower, yellow for 75%. Hover over it, or tap the player, to read the latest news. In the player picker you can also choose Fit only to hide everyone who is flagged. The flags describe the gameweek that is about to be played, so they only appear on that gameweek.

4. Use fixture difficulty as a tiebreaker

The fixtures list under your squad shows a difficulty number for each side of every match, from 1 (easy) to 5 (hard). When two players are close, pick the one with the easier opponent, and prefer home games. It will not beat form, but it settles the close calls.

5. Build a bench that can actually play

Your bench is not a parking space. Automatic substitutions bring on your first bench player, in your order, who played and keeps your formation legal. Put a regular starter in bench spot 1, not a fourth-choice defender who never plays. Keep one budget goalkeeper on the bench, because one goalkeeper must always sit there.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the team once and not coming back.
  • Captaining a player in a rotation-risk match without checking the lineup.
  • Stacking 3 players from a club with a hard fixture.
  • Spending the whole budget on the XI and leaving four non-playing bench players.
  • Ignoring flagged players because the name looks safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my captain after a match has started?
You can take the armband off any captain at any time, but you can only give it to a player whose match has not kicked off yet.
What does the red marker next to a player mean?
The player is ruled out, suspended or unavailable. Orange means a 50% chance or lower of playing, and yellow means a 75% chance.
Do the injury flags show for every gameweek?
They show for the gameweek that is about to be played, because they describe the squad news right now. They update automatically as the season moves on.
How often should I check my team?
Once before each day of fixtures is enough. Check the confirmed lineups about an hour before the first kickoff of the day.
