A differential is just a player almost nobody else in your league owns. That part is easy. The harder part is knowing when picking one is a good idea and when it's just a gamble dressed up as strategy.
When differentials actually work
They pay off in two situations. You're behind in your mini-league and need to make up ground, so owning what everyone else owns won't get you there. Or a player is clearly playing well and priced fairly, but ownership hasn't caught up yet, usually because he's not at one of the big six clubs. Both are decent reasons to move. "I'm bored of my team" is not.
When they backfire
If you're near the top of your mini-league, differentials are usually the wrong move. You already have an edge, and adding a low-owned player mostly adds risk without much reward. If he blanks, you've burned a transfer for nothing. If he scores, you gain less than you'd lose from your template player having an average week. Protect a lead with the same picks everyone else has, not a gamble.
How to check if one is actually worth it
- Minutes first. If he hasn't started three games in a row, the price doesn't matter, skip him.
- Fixtures next. A cheap defender with three winnable games in a row usually beats a one-week punt.
- Set pieces last. Penalty takers and corner takers have a scoring floor that most players don't, which makes a differential far less risky.
How many is too many
A good FPL squad isn't full of differentials, and it isn't full of template picks either. Two or three genuine differentials, mostly in midfield or up front where a goal or two swings your score the most, is usually enough. Keep your defence and goalkeeper closer to what everyone else owns โ a clean sheet is worth the same points whether 2% or 40% of the league has the player, so there's less to gain by differentiating there.
