Chip timing is what separates a template team from an actual mini-league winner, and the question everyone asks in August is whether Bench Boost belongs in GW1. Short answer: almost never. Here's the reasoning, chip by chip, before the Friday 21 August, 18:30 BST deadline.

The four chips, and when they're actually worth it

  • Wildcard — rebuilds your 15 for free. Best used after 4-8 gameweeks of real injury and form data, not blind in GW1 when nobody has any evidence yet.
  • Bench Boost — your whole bench scores alongside your XI. Only worth it when 14 or 15 of your players have strong fixtures and confirmed minutes, which GW1 squads almost never do.
  • Triple Captain — 3× on one premium. Save it for a soft home fixture or a double gameweek later in the season, not the week with the least information available.
  • Free Hit — a one-week unique XI. You'll rarely need this in GW1 unless your draft has already collapsed to injuries before a ball's been kicked.

Why GW1 Bench Boost is usually a trap

It only works if you deliberately built all 15 as confirmed starters, no £4.0m kids parked on the bench for their price alone. Most managers haven't done that by the first deadline, because there hasn't been a gameweek of team news yet to build around. If even two of your bench are question marks, save the chip.

The case for waiting until GW2

A round of real team news and price movement changes the picture completely. Track who's rising on /fpl-price-changes so your bench doesn't quietly become unaffordable while you wait for the right week to boost it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use Bench Boost in Gameweek 1?
Almost never — it needs 14 or 15 confirmed starters with decent fixtures, and most GW1 squads simply don't have that yet. Save it for a week you've actually built for.
When's the right time to play my first Wildcard?
Once early injuries and price moves have settled the picture — most managers who plan ahead wait until somewhere around GW4-GW8 unless they're forced into it sooner.
When does the GW1 deadline hit?
Friday 21 August 2026, 18:30 BST, for the official Fantasy Premier League game — set your chip plan before then, not after.
