The wait is over. - All 36 clubs sit in one single league table — no groups.
- Each club plays 8 league-phase matches: 2 opponents from each of the 4 seeding pots, one at home and one away.
- Pots were set by each club's UEFA club coefficient before the draw, then the 8 opponents were drawn individually — no fixed "groups" exist even informally.
- The league phase runs Matchday 1 today through Matchday 8 on Wednesday 27 January, when all 18 remaining fixtures kick off simultaneously — exactly as it worked the last two seasons, to stop anyone gaming a later kick-off with a canny scoreline elsewhere.
- Finish in the top 8 of the table and you go straight to the round of 16.
- Finish 9th–24th and you enter a two-legged knockout play-off in February for the eight remaining last-16 spots.
- Finish 25th or below and your European season ends after Matchday 8 — no parachute into the Europa League from here, unlike some Conference/Europa League cross-competition rules further down the coefficient list.
Matchday 1: what to watch tonight and this week
Matchday 1 fixtures are staggered across three nights, Tuesday 8 to Thursday 10 September, and the header act tonight is Real Madrid hosting Inter at the Bernabéu — a fixture with real history attached, since the last time a European Cup final was played at that exact stadium, in 2010, it was José Mourinho's Inter beating Bayern Munich 2-0 there. Real Madrid will want a very different result this time. Elsewhere tonight, Borussia Dortmund host Villarreal, Porto face Manchester City, and Lille take on Real Betis, while AEK Athens vs LASK and Club Brugge vs Aston Villa open the evening a little earlier. Wednesday brings the two heaviest-hitting fixtures of the whole opening round: Liverpool host Atlético Madrid at Anfield, and Napoli welcome an Arsenal side that will fancy nothing more than continuing exactly where they left off in Budapest back in May. PSG's title defence begins away to Slovan Bratislava the same night, alongside Barcelona vs Feyenoord and Sporting CP vs Galatasaray. Thursday closes out the round with Bayern Munich hosting newly-promoted Bodø/Glimt, Manchester United at home to Sabah, and Fenerbahçe vs Roma among the headline picks.
