📖 Virgil van Dijk: Biography & Story
The most dominant central defender of his era: Liverpool's colossus.
Virgil van Dijk transformed Liverpool's defence, and arguably their entire club trajectory. When Jürgen Klopp signed him from Southampton for a then-world record £75 million for a defender in January 2018, there were questions about the fee. Within six months those questions were answered. Liverpool went from conceding goals in embarrassing fashion to becoming one of the tightest defences in European football.
His physical profile is extraordinary: 6'4", powerful in the air, rapid for a big man and almost unbeatable in 1v1 situations. But what elevates him beyond other great defenders is his composure on the ball and his ability to read the game and position his body to cut out danger before it develops. He won the Champions League in 2019, the Premier League in 2019/20 and very nearly won the Ballon d'Or that year: losing to Lionel Messi by the smallest of margins.
A savage October 2020 challenge from Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby tore his ACL and kept him out for nine months. Van Dijk returned for 2021/22 and has since re-established himself as one of the world's best, captaining the Netherlands and helping Liverpool challenge at the top of the Premier League again.
