How FPL Price Changes Actually Work

Prices in FPL move up and down through the season based on transfers, not performance directly. A player can score a hat-trick and barely move, or hardly play and still climb, if enough people are buying or selling him relative to how many already own him. Here's how it actually works, not just "buy before it rises."

What actually triggers a rise or fall

Each player needs a certain volume of net transfers to move £0.1m, and that volume scales with how many people already own him. A heavily-owned superstar needs a huge wave of transfers to shift; a cheap, lowly-owned player can jump after a much smaller one. That's why a £4.5m bench player sometimes rises after one good week while a £15m player barely moves after a big performance. It's about the share of his owners buying or selling, not the raw transfer count.

When changes happen

Prices update once a day, overnight, based on that day's transfer activity. There's no live ticking mid-match. Most movement happens in the 24 to 48 hours after a good or bad performance, and again just before a popular player's next kickoff if a lot of people are rushing to bring him in.

Should you chase a price rise

Not on its own. £0.1m saved is £0.1m, that's it. If you were already planning to buy a player because of form or fixtures, doing it a day early to catch the rise is free value. If the only reason for the transfer is the rise itself, you're spending a transfer, or a hit, to save pocket change, and the exact mechanism isn't public, so trackers are estimating, not guaranteeing.

What matters more than price

Team value rarely decides anyone's season. It only really helps if you're banking it to afford a premium later. Fixtures, minutes and form decide your rank far more than a few extra tenths in the bank. Treat price watching as a side hobby, not a strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do FPL prices move at once?
Usually £0.1m per change, though a player can rise or fall more than once in the same day if transfer volume is high enough.
Do FPL prices change during a live match?
No. Prices update once a day, overnight, based on the transfer activity from that day.
Does scoring goals guarantee a price rise?
No. A price rise depends on how many people transfer the player in relative to his existing ownership, not directly on his score that week.
Is it worth taking a hit to catch a price rise?
Rarely. A -4 hit costs far more than the £0.1m you'd save, and the rise itself isn't guaranteed.
Where can I see today's FPL price changes?
FootballDream's price changes tracker lists every riser and faller straight from the official FPL API, refreshed daily.
