FootballQuest is FootballDream's free daily football guessing game — a football take on Wordle. Every day there is one mystery footballer from Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A or World Cup football, and you get six guesses to name them. Each guess is scored against the real player and unlocks a new tier of genuine club and international data, so even a wrong guess narrows the field. There's no download and no fee, though you do need a free FootballDream account so your streak, Football IQ and history are actually saved rather than lost the moment you close the tab.
The clues, guess by guess
FootballQuest builds every clue from real club and international records — never a generic word grid. Here is exactly what each guess reveals:
Clue tiers
- Guess 1 — Nationality, position and status: the country the player represents internationally, goalkeeper/defender/midfielder/forward, and whether they're currently active.
- Guess 2 — Club and age: the real club they currently play for, plus an arrow showing whether the mystery player is older or younger than your guess.
- Guess 3 — This season's club numbers: appearances, goals and assists for the current campaign, again with higher/lower arrows.
- Guess 4 — International caps: total appearances for their national team.
- Guess 5 — Verified football fact: one extra true detail — a trophy, a milestone, a transfer — never invented.
- Guess 6 — Your final attempt before the answer is revealed.
Hot/Cold: reading the similarity score
Alongside the clue tiers, every guess gets a Hot/Cold similarity score out of 100 — weighted across nationality, position, club, playing status, age and career stats. A score above 75 means you're close in almost every category; under 35 means the guess and the answer barely overlap. It's a fast way to tell whether your next guess is smarter than your last one, not just different.
Hints — and why they cost you
Stuck? Two hints are available per quest. Each states a single verified fact about the mystery player, and the second never repeats the first. Hints help you solve — but they reduce your Football IQ for that quest, so spend them only when a guess would otherwise be a pure shot in the dark.
How Football IQ is actually calculated
Football IQ scores every completed quest out of 100, built from a base of 20 points: up to 40 more for solving in fewer guesses, up to 15 for using fewer hints, up to 10 for solving quickly, and up to 15 for the difficulty of that day's puzzle. A one-guess, no-hint solve on an expert-difficulty quest is a perfect 100. Grinding it out on guess six with both hints spent still banks the base 20. Your average Football IQ shows on the daily leaderboard, which ranks solvers first, then fewest guesses, then fewest hints, then who finished earliest.
Best opening guess strategy
- Open with a current international regular from a major league — a well-known name reveals nationality, position and playing status all at once, whichever way the guess lands.
- Treat guess 1 as pure information-gathering, not a real attempt — you're trying to split the pool, not name the answer.
- Once nationality and position land, guess 2 should test club and age — a club match narrows things to one squad instantly, and an age arrow rules out a whole generation.
- Save your hints for guess 4 or later, once the club and season-stats clues have already narrowed the field — spending a hint on guess 1 wastes its information value.
- Watch the candidate counter, not just the colours — it shows exactly how many pool players still fit every clue so far, which tells you whether your last guess actually helped.
