82 points. That's the whole story of Bayern's 2024/25 season in one number โ a 13-point gap over defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, closed out with two matches still to spare. What makes it worth writing about isn't the gap itself, it's what Bayern were following. Leverkusen had just had the best season any Bundesliga club has ever had. Beating that wasn't supposed to be this straightforward.
What Bayern were actually up against
Under Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen went an entire 34-game season without losing โ 28 wins, 6 draws, 90 points โ and stretched their unbeaten run to 51 competitive matches, breaking a 59-year-old European record that had stood since Benfica set it. Harry Kane scored 36 Bundesliga goals that same season, in a losing cause, and it was still a Bundesliga record. So when 2024/25 kicked off, every club in Germany was measuring itself against something that shouldn't have been beatable again so soon.
Bayern found a way anyway
82 points, 99 goals scored, 32 conceded across 34 matches โ 25 wins, 7 draws, just 2 losses. It's the second-highest-scoring Bundesliga season by any club in a decade, and the difference from the previous year, when Bayern finished third, wasn't really tactical. It was Kane staying at the level he'd already shown, plus a Bayern defence that finally matched it. Frankfurt 7-2 Bochum was the highest-scoring match of the season, but Bayern themselves were the more relentless story โ rarely dropping points at home, grinding out the away wins that actually decide titles.
Kane, and why the number matters
26 Bundesliga goals, a second consecutive Torjagerkanone. Add it to his 36 from the year before and that's 62 league goals in his first 68 Bayern appearances โ a pace even Robert Lewandowski, the club's previous scoring benchmark, took four seasons to match. What's easy to miss underneath the goal count is the link-up play holding Bayern's system together; opposition defences couldn't simply mark the goals away, because so much else ran through him too.
Leverkusen: a brilliant season that still finished second
Defending a title everyone in Germany knows was historic is a genuinely hard job, and Leverkusen didn't fall apart trying โ 69 points, 19 wins, 12 draws, just 3 losses, and a 22-match unbeaten run mid-season that would've been the Bundesliga's longest ever in any other year. Patrik Schick had arrived as one of the division's most reliable strikers, finishing with 21 goals. The problem was simply that Bayern were better, and that Leverkusen's Champions League run split their squad's energy across two competitions at once. Alonso's side remains one of the best-built teams in Germany regardless.
Frankfurt were the team nobody saw coming
Third place, 60 points, a Champions League return. By mid-November Frankfurt were already comfortably inside the top four and simply never left โ pressing hard, defending the home atmosphere fiercely, built on the kind of athletic intensity that makes a side awkward for absolutely everyone. For a neutral, they answered the question of whether a club outside Germany's traditional power base could sustain a title challenge for a full season. The answer, at least for one year, was yes.
Dortmund had the pieces but not the cohesion
Fourth on 57 points โ 17 wins, 6 draws, 11 losses โ and Champions League qualification that still felt like an underachievement given the summer's ambition. Serhou Guirassy, signed from Stuttgart, delivered exactly what was asked of him with 21 goals. But 51 goals conceded is simply too many for a side with genuine title aspirations, and Dortmund's inconsistency in the games that mattered most was the season's real story. Guirassy carrying the attack, Karim Adeyemi dangerous on the flank, a midfield still searching for its identity โ the raw materials are there.
Kiel's promotion lasted exactly one season
Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum went down together, both on 25 points, both with the identical record of 6 wins, 7 draws, 21 losses. Kiel's was the harder one to watch โ first ever Bundesliga promotion in the club's history, and the pace and physicality of the division proved too much almost immediately, individual bright spots aside. Bochum had been fighting off relegation for two straight seasons and simply ran out of escapes this time. Hamburger SV arrived from 2. Bundesliga as champions to complete their own long-awaited return to the top flight.

- Leverkusen's 22-match unbeaten run would have been the longest in Bundesliga history in any season other than their own the year before.
